50/50 September LSR an Adventure!

Wow, what a ride. 11 of us showed up, and there was some serious shredding. Unfortunately, it was us getting shredded, not the gnar. After a long and beautiful climb up Charleau Gap Road and a lovely sunset, we dropped in to Cherry Tank trail. We suspected it would be ovegrown, but I would hesitate to even call it a MTB trail any more. The cat’s claw and other prickly things up there are so overgrown that in places we couldn’t even see the trail and all of us were bleeding by the end. Also, the monsoons were not kind to Cherry Tank and ruts were everywhere. After Cherry Tank we dropped in to Deer Camp and finished at the top of the chutes, then down 50 Year to the Lago del Oro TH. Regardless, it was a great ride that finished with some of us heading over to the CBC brew shed for burgers and awesome CBC beer.

A very big thank you to ALL who have been turning out to help SDMB and local trail-lovers do some much-needed TLC to Mt. Lemmon’s trails. Click on the photos below to see their galleries, and we encourage you to help out on a future TLC.

For September, we’ll be at Sweetwater! See our thread on TucsonMTB to RSVP for this trail event.

Crystal Springs Trailwork Recap

June 2nd was National Trails Day, and to celebrate, a dedicated number of Trail Love Crew volunteers made the drive up Mt. Lemmon to give needed love to a great and gnarly (but often ignored) trail called Crystal Springs. They cleaned and pruned, and cut and moved a number of fallen trees. This is quite a feat and sweat-equity when chainsaws are not allowed. Take a look at a few of the photos below to see their work.

TLC – Trailwork Crystal Springs on Mt. Lemmon – June 2nd, 2012 –

June 2nd is National Trails Day so we are planning that for our TLC event. Just starting to get details but the plan will be to work Crystal Springs Trail on Mt. Lemmon. It has been very overgrown the last few years and needs a hefty dose of TLC. Please check out the TucsonMTB thread for the most up-to-date information. Mark your calendars. Time 7:00 am. Parking: Butterfly TH is on the right side on Lemmon highway as you are going up. Will try and get the mile marker but think its around 25 maybe. We would like to have two groups of workers one hiking in from the Control rd. and the other hiking in from Butterfly TH. Let us know who wants in so we can make the plans depending on the amount of people. If the group is small enough we will just do a shuttled thru ride. Only about 5 miles of trail we plan on working on.

Fantasy Island The Shaft

Yep, you read that right. And it’s no joke. SDMB wants to thank hard working folks who give back to the trails and offer their time to the mountain biking community. Here’s how it works… You attend certain SDMB events and you earn entries into a raffle that will be held at the end of the year, at the SDMB Holiday Party. The more events you attend, the more entries you earn. It’s that simple! What can you win? Well, we’re not going to spoil the surprise, but lets just say that it makes the membership raffle prizes look like chump change. What certain SDMB events do you need to attend to earn yourself entries to the raffle?

  1. You will earn 3 entries for each SDMB TLC (Trail Love Crew) workday.
  2. You will earn 1 entry for each SDMB Last Saturday Ride.
  3. You will earn 1 EXTRA entry if you LEAD a group on a Last Saturday Ride.
  4. There may be other SDMB Special Events throughout the year that can earn you additional entries. These Special Events will be posted and highlighted as such, as well as noted how many additional entries these events could earn you.

Some additional notes about the raffle: To win, you MUST be a current member of SDMB as of the time of the drawing, Board Members and Officers of SDMB are NOT eligible to win, Winners do NOT need to be present to win.

Hope to see more people out at these events. They are always fun, even if they do involve a bit of work here and there. The best way to make an impact is to be involved!

Bicycle Dreams & Re-CYCLE – Fox Theatre – Wednesday, Jan 18th, 2012 – 5:30pm

Do you have some bike parts, clothing, bikes, bike relate anything you no longer have a need for? Lets Re-CYCLE it. Your trash may be someone’s treasure and vice versa. Bring something- take something. This event is part of the Bicycle Dreams movie at the Fox Theatre. Tickets are 8 in advance at Ordinary Bikes, Fairwheel, Sabino Cycles and Fitworks. $10 at the door. For Bicycle Dreams, filmmaker Stephen Auerbach and his crew worked around the clock to capture the highs and lows of the Race Across America. With 18 cameras in the field, the team found innovative ways to document this massive event. To uncover the inner workings of the race, embedded camera operators traveled inside the riders’ crew vehicles, gaining unprecedented access to the cyclists and their teams. Their footage captured emotional and physical breakdowns, late-night strategy sessions, and great moments of personal triumph, all in intimate detail. Auerbach then took on the enormous task of editing hundreds of hours of material into a powerful, inspiring look inside the most difficult race on Earth.
