8(ish) Days of Xmas Rides

The holidays are almost here, which means it’s time for awkward work parties, ugly sweaters, and the 8(ish) Days of Xmas ride series!

Now in its 7th year, the 8(ish) Days runs from Christmas through New Year’s.  The 8(ish) Days rides showcase the incredible variety of trails that Tucson has to offer, led by the clubs and businesses that make up Tucson’s vibrant mountain biking community.  Rides are open to everyone, but make sure to read the ride description and do your homework so you know what you’re in for.  All rides are social pace, no-drop rides.

Go ride with some new folks, check out a new trail, and celebrate the holidays the right way: on your mountain bike!

All rides are subject to cancellation due to weather conditions.  Please RSVP on the Facebook event pages or directly to the ride leaders so you can receive updates and additional information.

November Trail Love Crew (TLC) – Tucson Mountain Park

  • When: Sunday, November 22 @ 8:30am
  • Where: Tucson Mountain Park

For November we will be working in Tucson Mountain Park, on the connector between Explorer Trail and Robles Pass. It’s badly eroded and in need of some Trail Love! We will be working with Pima County NRPR to install drains and do rock work to keep the trail rideable and sustainable.

Due to limited parking at the work site, we will meet at the NE corner of Ajo and Mission, in the Food City parking lot in front of Rodolfo’s Mexican Restaurant at 8:30 AM. We will carpool to the 6′ culvert on Ajo and work until lunchtime.

Afterwards, plan on a king burrito or tacos; Rodolfo’s has some of the best Mexican food on the West side.

Please bring water, snacks, work gloves, and anything else you need to be comfortable and safe for a morning of trail work. SDMB will provide all the tools.

RSVP on the Facebook event.

November Social Ride

  • When: Sunday, November 29 @ 8am
  • Where: Arizona Trail/ATV Route
  • Ride Rating:  3B-3C

Come ride Redington Pass on Thanksgiving weekend! For November’s Social Ride, we are going to ride the AZT/ATV Route. This is a solidly intermediate ride, with about 1500 ft. of climbing over 12 miles. The route climbs the ATV route to the Italian Trap trailhead, then descends the AZT for several miles to Bellota Lake. After a break at the lake, we will climb out Bellota Rd. back to the ATV trail, and back to the car. The views are amazing, and the trail provides a mix of rock and flow.

This is a mellow-paced ride. No one gets dropped. Post-ride refreshments at the lot courtesy of SDMB. This is also a great way to link up with Milagrosa via the AZT if anyone wants to drop a vehicle at Suzenu and hitch a ride up to the top.

RSVP on the Facebook page event.

Meet at Le Buzz at 8:00 AM to arrange carpools and get coffee.

Como Access into Tortolitas CLOSED

Late last week, representatives from SDMB, TORCA, and CASA met with area property owners and a representative from Saguaro Ranch with the end result being that the present trail access from Como Road being declared closed. Sadly, there were a number of events cited that lead to their decision, each of which reflect an escalation of behaviors and emotions with the closure of access being the only remedy acceptable by the property owners. Additionally, Saguaro Ranch is under new ownership, and in the near future, a larger gate was slated to be installed, further declaring the community as closed.

On the silver-lining side of the story, a meeting has already been scheduled with Marana’s Planning & Development and Parks & Recreation Departments to resurrect the plan for a new trailhead access to be granted (knowing that the current situation was not acceptable). More information will be coming out as comes available.

Obviously some will want to keep riding through this access, or certainly know people who will. Please don’t, and urge others not to as well. While it was the unfortunate build-up over several confrontations that lead to the road closure, it is these same people who have indicated support for the new trail alignment, and will encourage the owners of the two other properties to support the re-route that will benefit all. Continuing to add fuel to the fire will only jeopardize what remains.

This is where you come in.

Whether in the Tortolitas or elsewhere, we all like to have access to our favorite trails. Truth is, most people don’t even think about what it took to bring that trail to fruition. Every trail has had its challenges with property ownership, government agencies, and working with the natural habitat. Trails just don’t happen, which is why we need your help to make them happen. If you are not already a SDMB member, join today to help is continue our mission to Build, Ride, and Protect trails in the Tortolitas and all over Tucson.
