| WHAT IS IT?
A set of cruel Summer climbing rides a few of us came up with as we modified Mark Flints original 5 peak s eries. Although they can be done in a week, as Yvonne and I did last year, the decision was made to give a generous 30 day window to complete them all.
THE RIDES:
Graham Cracker
Road type: Mixed
This ride is up Mt Graham just a bit south of Safford. There are 2 ways to do this ride that count.
- Ride from the prison too where the pavement ends
- Ride from the Noon Creek picnic area to the top. Include one loop of the Cunningham/Grant Hill trail in your ride.
Bonus if you do the Arcadia Trail on the way back down
Carr, bitten by bike!
Road type: Dirt
This ride is just south of Sierra Vista. Ride from the trailhead at the base of Carr Canyon Rd. to the Ramsey Vista campsite. On the return trip down the canyon do the John Cooper/Perimeter Trail Loop to return to the cars.
Squeeze the Lemmon (feel the sweat run down your face)
Road type: Mixed
Mt. Lemmon, up the Control Road down Catalina Hwy. You must start on Pavement in Oracle. San Manuel if you are really cool. Bonus if you do it as part of an “Over the Lemmon” ride.
Observe the Towers
Road type: Dirt
Santa Rita Mountains south of Tucson. A sick version of the Mt. Hopkins ride. Starting at the Smithsonian Ride to the observatory on top of Mt. Hopkins return to the car to refill water. Climb back up to the Elephant Head Mountain bike trail which will make a right turn on a dirt road. Climb this road up to the radio towers. Return to car and die.
Kitt Katt
Road type: Paved
12 mile climb up Kitt Peak west of Tucson. Call it a rest day!!!
Reddington Rectal. (explore the bowels of Reddington Pass)
Road type: Dirt
Park at the Tanque Verde Falls parking area(about 1 mile up Reddington Rd. after it turns to dirt) Coast down to the bottom to begin your ride. Turn around. Climb up the dirt road, passing the target shooters anus, continuing to the AZ Trail. Drop down to Italian Trap. Climb back up. 2 options form here. Either continue on the AZ Trail to Bellota Ranch Rd. and then climb back to Reddington Rd. and back or turn left on Reddington Rd. to Bellota Ranch Rd. Descend to where the AZ trail crosses the road then turn around and climb back to Reddington Rd. and back to the cars.
THE RULES:
- All rides must be completed in any 30 day period between May 15th and August 31st.
- Must be done on the same bike. No switching to a road bike and dressing in matching outfits to do Graham and Kitt Peak…not that there is anything wrong with that but just not for this series.
- No head starts
- If you are riding with a group you must ridicule the slowest and fastest rider relentlessly.
- You must be able to pronounce the name of the series to get a T-shirt with skulls, knifes, playing cards and ligers on it. Yeah it will be COOL.
NOTICES AND WARNINGS:
- A few of these rides are really stupid to do, much less in the summer. They will leave you whipped and crying for your teddy bear.
- DO NOT go out alone.
- DO NOT start any ride without as much water as you can carry plus some.
- DO NOT cheat. These rides are all done on the honor system. If you can’t finish one just man or woman up and try again next year. If we find out you have cheated we get to strip down your bike and sell the parts at the swap meet and make you ride a Department Store bike for the next attempt.
- DO NOT even think about holding me responsible when you cannot do your chores around the house or show up for work completely exhausted. I warned you some of the rides will tap all of your resources and leave you whipped.
- DO know where you are going. Bring maps, a GPS system or someone who really knows the route.
- DO e-mail me that you are doing the rides. Also e-mail me your progress so I can keep track. As soon as you finish all the rides and I confirm it I will get your T-shirt size. The T-shirts will be handed out at the monthly SDM
B ride in September.
- DO have fun
- Cost are you kidding me? NONE. But if you are not a member of SDMB please join. What is SDMB you ask? It is your local Advocacy, Trailbuilding and Riding group.
